When replacement makes more sense than repair

A siding repair works when you are missing a couple of pieces and the same product is still available. Replacement is for everything outside that. It usually comes down to one of these:

  • Your siding has been discontinued.

New pieces have to lock into the old ones. If the product is no longer made, there is nothing that fits, and a patch with a different profile will look like a patch.

  • The damage is spread out.

Cracked, loose or missing pieces on several walls, not one spot.

  • A storm hit the whole house.

Ohio gets one or two hailstorms most springs.

  • You want a different color.

You can't change the color of a house one wall at a time.

If you only have a few damaged pieces and your siding is still made, start with siding repair. It is the smaller job, and we will quote it that way if it fits.

How we decide, and how we tell you

Mervin comes out, looks over the house and takes photos. He works out what siding is on it, whether it can still be matched, and how far the damage goes. Then he tells you which way he would go and why. You see the same photos he does.

If repair will do the job, he will say so. If it won't, he will explain why.

  1. What siding is on it
  2. Whether it can still be matched
  3. How far the damage goes
  4. Which way he would go, and why

After a storm

Hail that cracks siding often damages the roof, gutters and fascia in the same storm, so we look at all of it.

One hail job we did shows how that can go

Hail damaged the fascia, the gutters and the roof, a roof of about 40 squares. The homeowners chose to redo the whole exterior and changed the entire color of the house while they were at it.

Mervin's summary: "It went really well, turned out really nice."

On insurance, we keep it plain. Mervin will tell you whether filing a claim makes sense for your situation. Once you choose us, we share our photos and documentation with your insurance company. Whether a claim is approved is up to your insurer. For roof damage from the same storm, see storm damage repair.

What a siding replacement includes

  1. 01

    Inspection and photos

We document the damage and identify the existing siding.

  2. 02

    Written estimate

Siding alone, or bundled with a new roof if the whole exterior is being done.

  3. 03

    Pick your siding

    We install PlyGem Variform vinyl.

  4. 04

    Tear-off

    The old siding comes off.

  5. 05

The six-man siding crew we work with puts on the new siding and trim. Our own crew handles any roofing on the same project.

  6. 06

    Cleanup and walk-through

We clean up and go over the finished job with you.

We work spring through fall and shut down for winter in mid-December.

For a full exterior, roof and siding bundles are available. See siding installation for how new siding and bundles work, and roof replacement for the roof side.

Why the cheapest quote can cost more

Some low bids come from operators with no insurance. If someone gets hurt on your property, that can land on you. We are licensed, insured, and bonded.

What moves the price on a replacement:

  • The size of the house
  • How many walls and corners
  • Whether damaged sheathing turns up under the old siding
  • Trim around windows and doors
  • Whether the roof is part of the job

The free estimate puts it in writing. Financing is available, including a 12-months-same-as-cash option.

FAQ

How do I know if my siding needs replacing or just repair?

If you are missing a couple of pieces and that product is still available, repair is usually right. If the siding has been discontinued, or damage covers several walls, replacement usually makes more sense. We look at the house and tell you which, with photos.

My siding is discontinued. Can you just use something close?

New vinyl pieces have to lock into the old ones, so "close" usually does not fit or look right. When a product is gone, the honest fix is replacing the affected walls or the whole house. We will walk you through both options.

Will insurance pay for new siding after hail?

That depends on your policy and your insurer's decision. Mervin will tell you whether filing makes sense. If you go ahead and choose us, we share our photos and documentation with your insurance company.

What warranty comes with replacement siding?

It will be in writing on your estimate.
