A historic core and postwar streets

Newark is the Licking County seat, with close to 50,000 residents at the 2020 census. Its housing is mixed. The median home was built in 1963, yet 28 percent date to 1939 or earlier. The Hudson Avenue Historic District has Italianate, Queen Anne and Colonial Revival homes, and the downtown district surrounds Courthouse Square.

That mix shapes the roof work. A newer house often needs a straightforward tear-off and new shingles. An older one can hide soft decking, spaced boards or tired chimney flashing that only shows once you're on the roof.

Either way, Mervin climbs the roof, takes photos and walks you through them. Then you choose between a roof repair and a roof replacement with real information in hand.

Missing and damaged shingles on a roof after a storm

Storm damage in Licking County

The National Weather Service surveyed two tornadoes in Licking County in early 2024. On February 28, an EF-2 that started in Franklin County ended near Granville South, with minor roof removal, blown-out windows and destroyed barns in the county. On March 14, an EF-1 that started south of Delaware ran more than 35 miles into Licking County, with partial roof removal on some homes there. Neither tornado was reported in Newark itself.

Wind and hail damage often isn't visible from the yard. Shingles can lose their seal, flashing can pull loose, and water can soak the deck while the roof still looks fine. A free inspection shows you what is actually up there. More on our storm damage repair page.

If you ask whether to file a claim, we tell you what we think. Your insurance company decides. Once you choose us as your contractor, we share our photos and documentation, and an ITEL report on your shingle when it's needed.

What moves the price of a roof

You get the real number in writing after the inspection. These are the factors behind it.

  • Size of the roof

More squares mean more material and labor.

  • Condition of the deck

Rotted boards, or spaced decking that has to be re-sheeted, add to the job.

  • Flashing and chimney work

Failed flashing or cracked chimney grout gets fixed as part of the roof.

  • Repair or replacement

If a repair will do, we say so, even when a new roof would be the bigger job.

Financing is available, including a 12-months-same-as-cash option. Terms are reviewed with your written estimate. See financing details.

Newark roofing questions

Answers for homeowners in Newark and around Licking County.

Do you work on the older homes along Hudson Avenue?

Yes. The Hudson Avenue Historic District runs between Stevens Street and State Route 16. We inspect older homes the same way as any other: from the roof, with photos of the deck edges, flashing and chimney.

Do I need a permit to replace my roof?

It depends on where your address falls. The Licking County Building Code Department enforces building codes across most of the county and says residential projects may need a permit from its office. Check with the county or the city before work starts.

Do you serve Heath, Granville or other Licking County towns?

Newark is on our list of service towns. For nearby towns, call us. If you're within reasonable driving distance, we'll likely still take the job.

Should I file an insurance claim after a storm?

Sometimes it makes sense and sometimes it doesn't. A claim may make sense when the damage is widespread or your shingle can no longer be matched. It may not when the damage is minor or what we find is age, not storm damage. Whether to file is your call, and your insurance company decides the claim.
