What an Asphalt Roof Installation Actually Involves

A full asphalt shingle roofing job is more than tearing off the old and stapling on the new. We strip the roof down to the deck, check the wood underneath, lay proper underlayment and flashing, and then install the shingles the way the manufacturer intends. We run Owens Corning Duration shingles on almost every job. The reason is the SureNail strip, a woven fabric band across the nailing zone that gives the fastener something stronger to bite into. We tried the other major brands and liked these better, plain and simple.

A rushed job skips steps. Someone nails high, misses the SureNail line, or shingles right over rotted decking to save an afternoon. That’s how a two-year-old roof starts leaking. As Mervin puts it, “if it takes me 2 days to do a job, in order to do it right, then that’s what we do.” Most of our jobs still finish in one day, because we run a six-man in-house crew that does this every week and knows the pace.

What Ohio Winter and Spring Hail Do to a Roof

Ohio weather is hard on asphalt shingle roofs, and the swing is the worst part. “In January, one day we have 60. The next day we’re going to be at 20 degrees,” and that wide temperature variation is one of the most damaging things a roof faces here. All that expanding and contracting is constant movement in your roof system, and it wears a roof out ahead of schedule. Ice that builds up in the gutters and valleys forces meltwater back up behind the shingles, and the decking rots over the winter while nobody’s looking. Then summer hits and the leak finally announces itself.

Then there’s hail. We don’t get pounded, but there’s reliably one or two hailstorms every spring, the most recent one hitting in April. Those storms are behind a lot of the insurance claims we handle. All of it comes back to the same point: how well the roof was installed decides how it holds up when the weather turns.

Our Asphalt Roof Installation Process, Start to Finish

Here’s how a job actually runs with us:

  • Free inspection. We get up on the roof, look it over, and show you what we find. No pressure, no scare tactics. If it doesn’t need replacing, we’ll tell you that too.
  • Tear-off and deck check. Once the old roof is off, we inspect the decking. This is where surprises live. On a recent job in Marietta we hit spaced decking, one-by-twelve pine boards laid with a half-inch to three-quarter-inch gap between them. By code, you can’t install shingles over that. So we re-sheeted the entire roof before a single shingle went down.
  • Underlayment and flashing. We lay the underlayment, then handle flashing at the valleys, walls, chimney, and vent pipes. This is the part that keeps water out, and it’s the part cheap operators cut corners on.
  • Shingles. Owens Corning Duration goes on, nailed in the correct zone with the right count and offset. Ridge cap and ventilation finish it out.
  • Cleanup. We run a magnet for stray nails and haul off every scrap. In Mervin’s words, “your place is going to look better than it did before we got there.

What a New Roof Costs in Wooster

We publish honest numbers because guessing helps nobody. A good base price runs around $420 per square (a square is 100 square feet of roof). A typical full roof replacement in this market lands between $11,000 on the low end and $22,000 on the high end. Where you fall depends on the size, the pitch, how many layers come off, and whether we find bad decking underneath that needs re-sheeting.

We also offer financing with a 12-months-same-as-cash option, so a sound roof doesn’t have to wait for the perfect month. We never run fake seasonal promos to pressure a decision. The number we quote is the real number.

Warranties That Transfer With Your Home

Every roof we install carries a 5-year workmanship warranty on our labor. On top of that, Owens Corning backs the shingles with a limited lifetime manufacturer warranty, with the option to upgrade to 50 years of full coverage. Both warranties are transferable, so if you sell the house, the protection goes with it, which is a real selling point when it’s time to list.

Why We Cost More Than a Chuck in a Truck

We lose most of the jobs we lose on price, and we’ve made our peace with that. “Chuck in a truck” is our name for the uninsured low-price operator who shows up without coverage and works fast to make the margin. We had a homeowner hire one recently, watch him start the job, then fire him mid-work and call us to quote it. Our number came in nearly double, and she was confused about why.

Here’s the honest answer. First, we use top-of-the-line materials, not the cheapest bundle on the shelf. Second, we don’t rush a job just to bank the money faster. Third, and this is the big one, we carry insurance. If something goes wrong on your property, “the homeowner can rest easy knowing they’re going to be fully covered, not on the hook for anything.” There’s a certain number reputable companies need to be at to make the work make sense. We’re at that number, and we’ll stand behind every roof at it.

Asphalt Roof Installation FAQs

Installed correctly, a quality asphalt shingle roof will typically last decades and most homeowners won't have to do it again. Our Owens Corning Duration shingles are classed as 30-year shingles with a limited lifetime warranty, and lifespan comes down mostly to install quality and how hard the Ohio weather hits. A roof that was nailed right and vented right outlasts a rushed one every time.

Properly installed shingles hold up in serious wind, and this is where the SureNail strip on Owens Corning Duration earns its keep. Blow-offs almost always trace back to bad nailing, nails placed too high or too few per shingle, which is exactly the corner a cheap crew cuts. We nail in the correct zone with the right count, and we've seen how much difference that makes when a spring storm rolls through.

It mostly comes down to preference, because both systems, if installed correctly, mean most homeowners won't have to do it again barring storm damage. We try to give people what they want rather than push one over the other. Asphalt shingle roofing is the most popular choice around Wooster for good reason: it looks great, the color options are wide open, and the cost is friendly.

We climb up, walk the roof, and check the shingles, flashing, chimney, valleys, and the decking condition, then show you exactly what we find. There's no cost and no obligation. Some folks just want to know where their roof stands with no estimate attached, and we're happy to do that too.

Underneath the shingles goes underlayment across the deck, plus flashing at the valleys, walls, chimney, and vent pipes to seal the vulnerable spots. But the real foundation is the roof deck itself, and if we find rotted or spaced decking on tear-off, we re-sheet it before anything else, because shingles are only as good as the wood they're nailed to.
