Residential Roof Repair, and What We Actually Fix
We repair residential shingle roofs. That’s the work we do day in and day out, and it’s what our 6-man in-house crew is built around. We run Owens Corning Duration shingles for most repairs, and we’ll be honest about where we draw the line. We don’t take slate work, and we don’t do commercial. If someone tells you they do everything under the sun, be careful. We’d rather do one thing right than a dozen things halfway.
A repair with us covers the common trouble spots on an asphalt roof: leaks, torn or missing shingles, storm and wind damage, and failing flashing and sealant. When a repair genuinely won’t hold, we’ll tell you that too, and walk you through whether a replacement makes more sense.
Signs You Might Need Roof Repair, and What We Usually Find
Most homeowners call us because they see something obvious: a stain on the ceiling, shingles in the yard after a windy night, or grit collecting in the gutters. Those are real signals. But the problem is often further along than what shows up inside the house.
Here’s the thing that surprises people. On the free inspection, we find spots where a roof is actively leaking but the water never reaches a living space. It drips out somewhere on the overhang, through the soffit, and nobody ever knows. Meanwhile the roof deck underneath is quietly rotting. The real problem is usually the deck below, not just the shingles you can see on top.
Watch for these:
- Water stains on ceilings or upper walls
- Shingles that are cracked, curling, or gone entirely
- Granules washing into your gutters
- Daylight or moisture in the attic
- Cracked grout or loose flashing around the chimney
You don’t have to diagnose it yourself. We still climb up and look the old-fashioned way, and then we show you exactly what’s going on.

What Actually Damages Ohio Roofs
Ohio winters are hard on a roof, and freeze-thaw is the worst of it. In January you can have 60 degrees one day and 20 the next. That wide temperature swing puts a lot of movement into your roof system, expanding and contracting over and over, and that constant movement wears a roof out before its time.
Ice is the other winter culprit. When ice builds up, it backs water up behind the shingles, that water sits, and the decking rots through the cold months. Summer hits and you never noticed a thing until a leak shows up.
Then there’s the chimney. We see cracked chimney grout letting water slip behind the flashing all the time. It’s a small thing that causes big damage. And spring brings hail. We don’t get slammed constantly, but there’s usually one or two hailstorms every spring around here, and that’s when a lot of repair and insurance work comes through the door.
Our Roof Repair Process, Inspection to Cleanup
We keep it simple and we keep it honest.
- Free inspection. We climb up and look, the old-fashioned way. No drones, no guesswork.
- We show you what we find. The leaks, the flashing, the deck condition, all of it, so you’re not taking our word blind.
- Honest recommendation. Repair or replace, we’ll tell you which one actually makes sense for your roof and your budget.
- The work. Our 6-man in-house crew does most jobs in a single day, and we don’t rush to squeeze in another job.
- Cleanup. As Mervin puts it, “Your place is going to look better than it did before we got there.”
We don’t cut corners to save time. “If it takes me 2 days to do a job, in order to do it right, then that’s what we do.
Storm Damage and Insurance Claims
If hail or wind hit your roof, we’ll walk you through it straight. Once you choose us as your contractor, we communicate directly with your insurance company. We back the claim with photos and ITEL reports to establish whether your shingle is still available, plus documentation when a roof genuinely can’t be repaired.
We’ll also tell you honestly whether filing is even worth it. If your shingle is discontinued, or a repair would cost more than it’s worth, filing usually makes sense. If it doesn’t, we’ll say so. The insurance side of this industry can get messy, and plenty of homeowners get taken advantage of, so we’d rather give you a straight answer than push you toward a claim you don’t need.
When Repair Beats Replacement, and When It Doesn’t
A localized leak, a wind-torn section, or damaged flashing is often a solid repair candidate. But once the deck underneath is rotting across a wide area, or the shingle is old and brittle across the whole roof, a repair becomes throwing good money after bad. We help you make that call with what we actually find up there, not with a sales pitch.
What Roof Work Costs in This Market
We’ll give you real numbers, which most roofers won’t. A good base price runs around $420 per square, though it varies with the roof. A full replacement in this market typically lands between $11,000 and $22,000. A targeted repair costs a fraction of that, and after the inspection we’ll give you a clear written estimate before anyone lifts a hammer.
We also offer financing, including a 12-months-same-as-cash option, so a needed repair or replacement doesn’t have to wait. And no, we don’t run gimmick seasonal promos. As Mervin says, “there’s a certain number that reputable companies need to be at, to make it make sense.
Why Homeowners Choose Hershberger Brothers, the "Chuck in a Truck" Difference
Sometimes our price comes in higher than the cheap guy down the road, and homeowners ask why. We get it. One homeowner hired a low-price operator, he started the work, she fired him mid-job, and asked us to quote it. Our number came in nearly double, and she was confused. Here’s the honest answer, in Mervin’s three reasons:
- Top-of-the-line materials. We’re not saving money by putting cheap product on your roof.
- We don’t rush jobs to make money. The work gets the time it needs to be done right.
- We carry insurance. “The homeowner can rest easy knowing they’re going to be fully covered, not on the hook for anything.”
That last one is the whole ballgame. A “Chuck in a truck” shows up without insurance, and if someone gets hurt or something goes wrong, that can land on you. We’re a family-run business, twin brothers, licensed, insured, and bonded, in this since 2015.
Materials and Warranty
We’re an Owens Corning Preferred contractor, and we run Duration shingles because we like the SureNail strip and we simply liked them better than the other major brands once we started using them. Our repairs and installs carry a 5-year workmanship warranty, and the Owens Corning manufacturer coverage is transferable, so it stays with the home if you sell.
Proof, Reviews and Real Ohio Roofs
We hold a 5.0 rating across 60 Google reviews and we’re BBB accredited with an A+ rating. Those come from real Ohio homeowners, not paid placement.
Here’s the kind of thing we run into. On one hail job, we found significant storm damage on the inspection and advised the homeowner to file a claim, which got approved. When we got into the roof we hit spaced decking, which is one-by-twelve pine boards laid with a half-inch to three-quarter-inch gap between them. By code, you cannot install shingles over that. So we re-sheeted the entire roof and then shingled it clean. The job went smoothly, just as planned, and that’s the point. The craftsmanship shows up in the parts you never see.
Areas We Serve
We’re based in the Wooster area and cover the surrounding Ohio markets. Our priority towns are Wooster, Mansfield, Massillon, Akron, and Canton, and we work the communities between and around them. As a rule we stay within about a 90-minute drive of home. Beyond that we won’t flat-out refuse a job, but we’ll price it for the distance and be upfront with you about it. If you’re not sure whether you’re in our range, just call and ask.

Roof Repair FAQ :
A quality shingle roof, installed right, is built to last for decades and most homeowners won't have to do it again barring storm damage. We install Owens Corning Duration, classed as a 30-year shingle with a limited lifetime manufacturer warranty. Ohio's freeze-thaw and hail are what shorten that life, which is why a proper install and honest repairs matter so much.
Properly installed shingles are designed to stay put through the heavy storms we get, and the SureNail strip on the Duration shingle is a big reason we trust them. Most blow-offs we see trace back to a rushed or sloppy install, not the shingle itself. If a storm did tear some off, that's exactly the kind of repair we handle.
Yes, plenty of roofs need only a section repaired rather than a full replacement. A localized leak, a wind-damaged area, or failed flashing can often be fixed without touching the rest of the roof. We'll tell you honestly whether a partial repair will hold or whether the underlying deck condition means you're better off replacing.
It often does when the damage comes from a covered event like hail or wind, but it depends on your policy and the cause of the damage. Once you choose us as your contractor, we deal directly with your insurer and support the claim with photos and ITEL reports. We'll also give you a straight answer on whether filing is worth it in the first place.
No, we're residential only. We focus on homes so we can do that work at the level we want to, and we'd rather point a commercial job elsewhere than take work outside our lane.
