Hershberger Brothers Roofing

Siding Installation in Wooster, OH

We’re Hershberger Brothers Roofing, a family-run outfit that’s been working on Ohio homes since November 2015. We’re licensed, insured, and bonded, and when a siding job comes in, we take it and we do it right. We install PlyGem Variform vinyl siding on homes around Wooster and the surrounding area, and the way we start is simple: a free inspection where we show you what we find. No pressure, no rush to sell you something you don’t need. If your panels are cracked, warped, or letting Ohio weather in behind them, we’ll walk your walls with you and tell you straight what’s going on. Same brothers, same standard we bring to every roof.

What We Install (and What We Don't)

We put up PlyGem Variform vinyl siding. It holds color, it stands up to the freeze-thaw swings we get here, and it doesn’t ask a homeowner to repaint every few years. That matters in this climate, and it’s why we like running it. We’re upfront about the rest: we don’t do James Hardie or any fiber cement, and we don’t touch slate. Those aren’t in our lane, and we’d rather tell you that now than pretend otherwise and learn on your house.

Siding is roughly five percent of what we do. Roofing is the bulk of it. That’s not a knock on the work. It means when we quote your siding, we’re not padding a calendar or chasing volume. We’re taking a job we can do well and finish clean.

Vinyl Siding and Vinyl Shakes

Standard vinyl panels are our bread and butter, and they cover most of what homeowners around here are after. We can run vinyl shakes if that’s the look you want, though we’ll be honest that shakes aren’t our favorite to install. If you’ve got your heart set on them, we’ll talk it through. As Mervin puts it, “we try to give the people what they want.”

Signs It's Time for New Siding

You don’t have to guess. A few things tell us a wall is ready. Cracked or warped panels are the obvious one, usually where the sun beats hardest or where a section has been flexing through years of temperature swings. Fading that’s gone blotchy instead of even. Panels that rattle or have pulled loose at the seams. And the one that costs you the most if you ignore it: moisture getting behind the siding, where it sits against the sheathing and quietly does damage nobody sees until it’s a real problem.

Gaps are the sneaky ones. A small opening where a panel has shifted or a J-channel has separated lets wind-driven rain and snow slide in behind the wall. In an Ohio winter, that water freezes, expands, and works the gap wider. By the time you notice a soft spot or a stain inside, the trouble started seasons ago.

That’s exactly what the free inspection is for. We look at the whole wall, not just the piece you’re worried about, and we show you what we find so you can decide with real information in front of you.

What Ohio Weather Does to Siding

Ohio weather is hard on the outside of a house, and siding takes the same beating a roof does. The worst of it is the freeze-thaw cycle. Mervin describes our Januarys plainly: “one day we have 60. The next day we’re going to be at 20 degrees.” That kind of swing means constant expansion and contraction. Everything on your exterior is moving, expanding when it warms and pulling tight when it drops, and materials that weren’t installed with room to breathe crack, buckle, or pop loose.

Vinyl siding is built to move, but only if it’s hung right. Nail it too tight and you fight the material’s natural expansion until something gives. That’s a big reason local experience matters here. A crew that installs in this climate every year knows to leave the proper play in the panels so they can shift without tearing themselves apart.

Then there’s hail. We don’t get a lot of it, but we usually see “one or two hailstorms every spring,” and hail dents and cracks siding the same way it chews up a roof. After a spring storm, it’s worth having someone look before small damage turns into water getting in.

Our Siding Installation Process

We keep it straightforward. Here’s how a siding job runs with us.

  1. Free inspection. We come out, look at your walls, and show you what we find. If there’s damage behind the siding or a spot letting water in, you’ll see it too.
  2. Honest estimate. We walk you through what the job needs and what it costs. No surprise add-ons, no filler.
  3. Prep and moisture handling. Before a single panel goes up, we deal with what’s underneath. Bad sheathing gets addressed, and the wall gets a proper weather barrier so water has somewhere to go instead of sitting against your house.
  4. Installation with room to move. We hang the PlyGem Variform panels with the right expansion allowance so they can breathe through those 60-to-20-degree swings. Corners, J-channel around windows and doors, and the top course all get done the way they’re supposed to be done, not rushed.
  5. Clean site. When we’re finished, we clean up after ourselves. As we always say, your place is going to look better than it did before we got there.

If a job takes an extra day to do it right, that’s what it takes. We don’t rush work to move on to the next one.

Siding and Roof Together: Whole-Exterior Jobs

A lot of homeowners who call about siding are also staring at a tired roof, and after a hailstorm the two often go hand in hand. Because roofing is our core work, we’re set up to handle the whole exterior at once. That’s a real advantage. One crew, one point of contact, one schedule, and everything ties together instead of coordinating two contractors who point fingers when something doesn’t line up.

Doing it together can genuinely change the look of a house. We had a whole-exterior job in Waterford where the homeowners had hail damage to the roof, fascia, and gutters, decided to do it all, and changed the entire color of the house in the process. It went really well and turned out really nice. If you’re weighing siding and a roof in the same season, ask us about doing both. Often it’s the smarter way to spend the money.

What Siding Installation Costs

The honest answer is that siding cost depends on your house. Square footage, how many corners and windows the walls have, the condition of what’s underneath, and whether any sheathing needs replaced all move the number. We’d rather give you a real figure after we’ve seen the walls than throw out a per-square guess that won’t hold up.

Here’s the part worth being straight about: we’re usually not the cheapest quote, and we know why. Mervin has a name for the operator who comes in low, “Chuck in a truck,” and he had a live example of it. A homeowner hired a cheap guy, fired him mid-job when the work went sideways, and called us. Our price came in nearly double, and she wanted to know why. The answer is three things: we use top-of-the-line materials, we don’t rush the job just to make money, and we carry insurance, so the homeowner is fully covered and not on the hook for anything if something goes wrong on their property.

There’s a certain number a reputable company has to hit for the math to make sense. We land there. It’s what lets us stand behind the work.

Why Homeowners Choose Hershberger Bros

The biggest fear people have before hiring anyone to work on their home is whether they picked the right, trustworthy contractor. Here’s why homeowners around here trust us with it.

We’re licensed, insured, and bonded. That’s not a slogan. It’s the line between a repair that’s your problem and one that’s ours if something happens on the job. We use quality materials and we don’t cut the job short to squeeze margin. We’re a real family-run business, twin brothers who started this in 2015, with Marvin leading the crew and Mervin handling the office and the walk-throughs. We’re not one guy with a ladder and a phone.

The proof is on record: an A+ rating with the BBB and a 5.0 rating across our Google reviews. Our roofing work carries a 5-year workmanship warranty, and we bring the same care to a siding wall that we bring to a ridgeline. When we’re done, the site is clean and the house looks right.

Where We Work

We’re based in the Wooster area and serve the surrounding Ohio communities. Our priority markets are Mansfield, Wooster, Massillon, Apple Creek, Akron, and Canton, and we work the towns in between as well. The siding crew covers the same map as our roofing crew, so wherever we’ll come out for a roof, we’ll come out for siding.

We generally keep jobs within about a 90-minute drive of home base. If you’re a bit farther out, we don’t turn you away, we’ll just be upfront about the distance when we price it. If you’re not sure whether you’re in range, call and ask. Odds are good we’re already working near you.

Siding Installation FAQ

Quality vinyl siding, installed correctly, will last decades and shouldn't need replacing again for most homeowners. The catch is "installed correctly." Panels hung with proper expansion room hold up to Ohio's freeze-thaw swings. Panels nailed too tight fail early no matter how good the product is.

No, we don't install James Hardie or any fiber cement, and we don't do slate either. We run PlyGem Variform vinyl. We'd rather point you honestly to what we do well than take on a material outside our lane.

Yes, and we regularly do. Roofing is our core work, so a whole-exterior job with one crew and one schedule is well within what we handle. It's often the cleaner, smarter way to tackle both, especially after a storm hits the roof, gutters, and walls together.

We're licensed, insured, and bonded. That protects you: if something happens on your property during the job, you're covered and not on the hook for it. It's one of the real differences between us and the low-price operator who shows up without insurance.
