From Fourth Street to Sippo Heights

About two-thirds of Massillon homes are owner-occupied, per Census estimates. A third were built in 1939 or earlier, and the median build year is 1957, so the city mixes older houses, like the Greek Revival, Italianate and Queen Anne homes of the Fourth Street Historic District, with mid-century ones.

Age matters less than condition. A roof deck that has stayed dry can still be sound. One that has taken years of ice backing up at the eaves often isn't. Mervin climbs the roof, checks the deck, flashing and chimney, and gives you a straight answer on roof repair or a full roof replacement.

We are based in Apple Creek in Wayne County and serve the city from there. Marvin leads our own six-man roofing crew, so the people who quote your roof and the people who install it work for the same family-run company.

Tornadoes and wind in the Massillon area

In 2002, an F1 tornado went through downtown along Tremont Avenue SW and Lincoln Way W. Four homes lost entire roofs, and 23 properties on List Street had roof or siding damage or downed trees. In March 2019, an EF-0 in Perry Township, Stark County, left missing shingles and siding on some structures. In April 2020, another EF-0 ran from two miles west of the city toward East Sparta, with roof damage on a few homes.

Wind lifts shingles, breaks their seal and bends flashing loose. Water then gets in without showing on a ceiling. A free storm damage inspection tells you what's up there. If you ask whether to file a claim, we tell you what we think. Your insurance company decides it.

Massillon roofing questions

What to know before you book.

Do you work on homes in the Fourth Street Historic District?

Yes. The district was listed on the National Register in 1982 and has Greek Revival, Italianate and Queen Anne houses. Older roofs with more valleys and wall joints need careful flashing work, and Mervin looks at the flashing and chimney on the inspection.

Do roofers have to register with the City of Massillon?

The Massillon Building Department registers all construction contractors every year and issues permits for repair and alteration work. Its page doesn't list a roofing-specific permit rule, so call the department at (330) 830-1724 to confirm for your project.

Do you serve Navarre and Perry Township?

The city is on our list of verified service areas. Navarre borders the city to the south, and most of the city lies in Perry Township. If you're just outside city limits, call us. If you're within reasonable driving distance, we'll likely still take the job.

Should I file an insurance claim after wind damage?

Sometimes. If the damage is widespread or your shingle has been discontinued, a claim may make sense. If it's a few shingles, a repair is usually the better use of your money. We'll tell you what we think. Your insurer decides the claim.

How long does a roof replacement take?

Most of our replacements are one-day jobs. If the deck needs re-sheeting or there is a lot of flashing work, it can take longer. When a job needs a second day to be done right, it gets one.

Had wind or hail? Let's see what's up there.

Book a free inspection in Massillon. After wind or hail, Mervin climbs the roof, photographs any damage and tells you whether it needs a repair, a replacement or nothing at all.
