Houses with some age on them
The city's population roughly tripled in the 1910s. Goodyear's Frank Seiberling built Goodyear Heights for company workers, and Harvey Firestone built Firestone Park for his. Kenmore grew up along a trolley line in the same decade, and much of Wallhaven and Merriman Valley was built from the 1910s through the 1930s.
Census estimates put about 60 percent of Akron homes before 1960. Many houses that age have likely been re-roofed at least once, so what's underneath matters more than the shingles you can see. Mervin checks the deck, flashing and chimney, then tells you whether it's a roof repair or a roof replacement.
We're a family-run company based in Apple Creek, in Wayne County. Mervin does the inspections and estimates, and Marvin leads our own six-man roofing crew.
What we find on older Akron roofs
About a third of the city's homes were built in 1939 or earlier. On houses that age, these are the problems Mervin looks for first.
Rotted decking
Slow leaks and winter ice soak the boards under the shingles, and they rot while the roof still looks fine from the street.
Spaced decking
Older roofs can sit on 1x12 pine plank decking laid with a half-inch to three-quarter-inch gap between boards. By code, shingles can't go over that, so the whole roof gets re-sheeted first.
Cracked chimney grout
Water gets in through the chimney mortar and runs down behind flashing that looks fine. Resealing the flashing alone won't stop it.
Ice at the roof edge
Akron averages about 47 inches of snow a year. Ice builds at the eaves, meltwater backs up under the shingles, and the deck rots over the winter. See how we build a roof, layer by layer.
What the free inspection covers
Deck, flashing and chimney. Mervin climbs the roof and checks the parts you can't see from the yard.
Photos. You see what he sees, before you decide anything.
A free written estimate. Repair if repair makes sense. Replacement only if the roof is past that point.
Own a rental? The inspection works the same, and the estimate is in writing.

The August 2023 windstorm
On August 24, 2023, storms brought damaging straight-line winds across the National Weather Service's Cleveland area. The NWS logged a tree down on a car in Akron's Goodyear Heights. Nearly 250,000 customers lost power at the peak. Most of the damage across the region was downed trees and power lines, and several homes had roof or siding damage.
Wind lifts shingles and breaks their seal even when nothing blows off, and water can soak the deck before a stain shows inside. A free storm damage inspection tells you what's actually up there. If you ask about a claim, we tell you what we think. Your insurer decides it.

Akron roofing questions
What homeowners and landlords ask us.
Do you work in neighborhoods like Kenmore, Firestone Park and Merriman Valley?
Yes. Akron is one of our service areas, and that includes its neighborhoods: Kenmore, Firestone Park, Goodyear Heights, Wallhaven, Merriman Valley, Highland Square, Ellet and the rest. If you're just outside the city, call us. If you're within reasonable driving distance, we'll likely still take the job.
My house was built before 1940. Is the roof worth repairing?
It depends on the deck. If the boards are solid and the problem is in one spot, like a chimney or a valley, a repair usually makes sense. If the deck is soft in several places, or the house has spaced decking, we'll tell you replacement is the better use of your money and show you the photos.
Do you work on rental properties?
Yes. About half of the city's occupied homes are rented, per Census estimates. Landlords get the same free inspection, photos and written estimate as anyone else.
Does Akron get enough snow to cause ice problems on a roof?
The city averages about 47 inches of snow a year under NOAA's 1991-2020 normals. When ice builds up at the roof edge, melting snow backs up behind it and works under the shingles. The deck can rot over the winter without anyone noticing until summer.
Do you offer financing?
Yes. Financing is available, including a 12-months-same-as-cash option. Terms are reviewed with your written estimate. See financing for details.
