Historic streets, older roofs

Mount Vernon is the Knox County seat, and its houses run old. Census figures put the median year built at 1955, and 57 percent of homes predate 1960. Four districts are on the National Register of Historic Places: Downtown, East High Street, East Gambier Street and the North Main and North Gay Streets area.

On houses like these, the roof often hides more than it shows. Flashing at chimneys and valleys wears out, and the deck under the shingles can soften for years before a stain shows inside. Mervin climbs the roof, takes photos and walks you through them, then tells you plainly whether a roof repair will hold.

We are a family-run company based in Apple Creek, in Wayne County, owned by twin brothers. Our in-house crew of six, led by Marvin, does the roofing.

What we look for on older roofs

Inspections on houses from the 1950s and earlier tend to turn up the same few problems. Here is what Mervin checks before he writes anything down.

01

Cracked chimney grout

When the mortar in a chimney cracks, water gets in above the flashing and runs down behind it. New sealant on the flashing won't stop that kind of leak.

02

Spaced decking

Some older homes have pine boards with gaps between them. Code does not allow shingles over it, so a roof replacement starts with re-sheeting the whole deck.

03

Valleys and wall lines

Corners, valleys and the line where a roof meets a wall all rely on flashing. When it fails in more than one place, patching one spot won't fix the roof.

04

Water at the overhang

Leaks don't always reach the ceiling. Water can run down the deck and drip out through the soffit. That is a job for soffit repair only after the roof is fixed.

What the free inspection includes

  • A climb, not a glance. Mervin gets on the roof and checks the deck, flashing and chimney.

  • Photos of everything. You see what he sees.

  • A straight answer. Repair, replacement or nothing at all.

After the 2026 windstorms

Local reports describe two damaging wind events in Mount Vernon in 2026. In March, the city reported downed trees and power lines, with roofs, street signs and shelter buildings damaged. In June, a windstorm left nearly 8,000 customers without power, and local news reported several roofs damaged or torn off homes and businesses.

Wind damage is not always visible from the driveway. Lifted shingles can lose their seal and let water onto the deck while the roof still looks fine from below. A free inspection tells you what is actually up there. Our storm damage repair page explains how we work with insurance.

If you ask whether a claim makes sense, we tell you what we think. Your insurance company decides the claim. Once you choose us as your contractor, we share our photos and documentation with them.

Mount Vernon roofing questions

Answers to what homeowners in Knox County ask us most.

Do you work on homes in the historic districts?

Yes. Mount Vernon is one of our service towns, and that includes homes in the Downtown, East High Street, East Gambier Street and North Main-North Gay Streets districts. Before work starts, check with the city's Building and Code Enforcement department about any permit your job needs.

Can you check my roof after the June windstorm?

Yes, and the inspection is free. Mervin climbs the roof, photographs any lifted, creased or missing shingles and bent flashing, and tells you whether it needs a repair, a replacement or nothing at all.

Do you serve Gambier, Fredericktown or other Knox County villages?

Mount Vernon is on our list of service towns. For nearby villages, call us. If you're within reasonable driving distance, we'll likely still take the job.

Who will I deal with?

Mervin, one of the twin brothers who own the company, does your inspection and estimate and stays your point of contact. Marvin leads the roofing crew. Meet the brothers.

Can I finance a new roof?

Financing is available, including a 12-months-same-as-cash option. Terms are reviewed with your written estimate. See financing for more.
